End-of-Line Flame Arrester
An end-of-line flame arrester is installed at the open end of a vent pipe or storage tank vent to prevent atmospheric flame from entering the tank or pipeline system. It is the most commonly used flame arrester in chemical storage, petroleum tanks and solvent storage applications.
Flow Industries end-of-line flame arresters are designed to quench flame fronts caused by deflagration — protecting storage tanks from catastrophic ignition when venting flammable vapours to atmosphere.

What is a Flame Arrester?
Working Principle
A flame arrester is a passive safety device that allows gases and vapours to flow freely while stopping the transmission of flame. It works by forcing the flammable gas through a matrix of narrow channels in the flame element — typically stainless steel crimped ribbon. These narrow channels absorb heat from the flame front faster than it can be generated, cooling the flame below its ignition temperature and quenching it completely.
There is no moving parts, no power requirement and no maintenance-intensive system. A flame arrester is always on — providing continuous passive protection.
Deflagration vs Detonation — Which Type Do You Need?
Condition | Flame Speed | Arrestor Required |
|---|---|---|
Process pipeline both ends | Bidirectional risk | Inline type |
Open tank vent | Deflagration risk | End-of-line / drumvent |
Long pipeline (over 3m) | DDT risk possible | Inline detonation type |
Short pipeline (under 3m) | Deflagration risk | End-of-line type |
Rule of thumb: If your pipeline is longer than 3 metres between the ignition source and the arrester, always specify a detonation-rated device. For tank vents under 3 metres, a deflagration type is generally sufficient.
