A flame arrester prevents flame propagation through a pipeline or vent — it stops fire from travelling through flammable gas. A breather valve controls pressure and vacuum in a storage tank during filling and emptying. Many storage tank applications require both devices, either as separate units or as a combined flame arrester cum breather valve.

Standard Flow Industries flame arresters are suitable for IIA (propane equivalent) and IIB (ethylene equivalent) gas groups per IEC 60079. IIC (hydrogen equivalent) gas group requires specially designed narrow channel elements available on request.

How often should a flame arrester be inspected?

Flame arresters should be inspected at least annually in clean service and every 3 to 6 months in dirty or fouling service. The stainless steel element should be removed, inspected for blockage or damage, cleaned and reinstalled. A blocked flame arrester provides no protection so regular inspection is critical.

An inline flame arrester is installed within a pipeline to prevent flame propagation between sections of a process system. Unlike end-of-line types, inline flame arresters handle bidirectional flow and must withstand continuous process pressures.

Detonation Flame Arrester

A detonation flame arrester is designed to stop the most severe form of flame propagation — detonation — where the flame front travels faster than the speed of sound and produces a supersonic shock wave. Standard deflagration arresters cannot stop a detonation.

What is a Flame Arrester?
Working Principle

A flame arrester is a passive safety device that allows gases and vapours to flow freely while stopping the transmission of flame. It works by forcing the flammable gas through a matrix of narrow channels in the flame element — typically stainless steel crimped ribbon. These narrow channels absorb heat from the flame front faster than it can be generated, cooling the flame below its ignition temperature and quenching it completely.

There is no moving parts, no power requirement and no maintenance-intensive system. A flame arrester is always on — providing continuous passive protection.

Rule of thumb: If your pipeline is longer than 3 metres between the ignition source and the arrester, always specify a detonation-rated device. For tank vents under 3 metres, a deflagration type is generally sufficient.
